Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) lets equipment plug directly into an EV's battery through a standard power socket or adapter, powering tools, camping equipment, or emergency devices without any fixed charger, grid connection, or home wiring involved.

How It's Different From V2G and V2H

V2G and V2H both route power through fixed infrastructure — a bidirectional charger connected to the grid or a home's wiring. V2L skips that entirely: power comes straight out of the vehicle through a built-in socket or a cable adapter, the same way a portable generator would supply a device, just powered by the car's battery instead of fuel.

Typical Uses

Power tools and equipment on a job site with no mains connection, camping and outdoor equipment, charging other electric devices, or running essential appliances during an emergency away from home — anywhere a generator would traditionally be used, a V2L-capable vehicle can substitute.

How much power can V2L actually deliver?

It depends on the vehicle, but typical V2L outputs range from around 1.5kW to 3.6kW — enough for power tools, small appliances, or camping equipment, though not enough for the high loads a whole-home backup system would need.

Does V2L need a special charger installed?

No. V2L is a feature built into the vehicle itself, delivered through a socket or adapter on the car, rather than through fixed home or depot charging infrastructure. It works away from any charger, which is the main thing that distinguishes it from V2G and V2H.
