Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) lets an EV's battery power a home's electrical circuits directly, most commonly used as backup power during a grid outage or to avoid drawing from the grid during expensive peak-rate hours.

How It's Different From V2G

Where V2G exports power out to the wider electricity grid, V2H keeps the power local: it flows from the vehicle's battery into the home's own wiring, typically through a bidirectional charger and a transfer switch or hybrid inverter that isolates the home from the grid when needed. This is what makes V2H useful during a power cut — the vehicle can keep essential circuits running even when the grid itself is down, which grid-export-only V2G cannot do.

Typical Use Cases

Two main scenarios: emergency backup during an outage, running lights, appliances, and essential circuits from the vehicle's battery instead of a generator; and everyday peak-rate avoidance, drawing on the vehicle's stored charge during expensive tariff windows instead of buying grid electricity at the highest price of the day.

Neutron's Approach

Where V2H vehicle support isn't yet available, our Home Power Wall delivers the same backup and peak-avoidance benefits from a dedicated stationary battery that's always at home, independent of whether the car is parked on the drive.

Can V2H power my whole house during a power cut?

It depends on the installation. Some V2H setups back up the whole home; others back up a limited set of essential circuits, similar to a partial-home battery backup system. This is determined by how the electrician wires the transfer switch, not by the vehicle itself.

Is V2H the same as using a stationary home battery?

They serve a similar purpose but use different hardware. A stationary battery like a Power Wall is a dedicated asset that's always at home; V2H uses the battery already inside a vehicle you drive, which means the backup capacity isn't available whenever the car is away.
