"Intelligent charging" isn't one single mechanism; it's the umbrella covering several related capabilities working together: tariff management (charging in the cheapest price windows), load management (sharing power with the rest of the site's demand), and remote connectivity via protocols like OCPP that let a charger be monitored and controlled from a central platform rather than only from its own front panel.
A "dumb" charger, by contrast, has none of this: plug in, and it delivers maximum power until the vehicle is full or unplugged, with no awareness of price, site load, or remote instruction.
Why It's Increasingly the Default
As electricity tariffs become more variable and sites add more chargers onto the same grid connection, running every charger "dumb" gets expensive and, past a certain number of bays, becomes physically impossible without a grid upgrade. Intelligent charging is what makes multi-charger sites, dynamic tariffs, and remote fleet management workable at scale.
