The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a UK government grant, administered through OZEV, that covers part of the cost of buying and installing EV charge points at a business, charity, or public sector site.
What the Grant Covers
The scheme offers a voucher-based contribution toward the cost per charging socket, up to a capped number of sockets per applicant, covering both the charger hardware and installation costs. It's aimed at standard AC charging infrastructure for staff, fleet, and visitor vehicles at a workplace site with dedicated off-street parking.
Who It's Really For
The WCS suits organisations adding car-park-style AC charging for employee and light commercial vehicles. It's less suited to high-power depot fleet charging, where DC fast charging and group charging infrastructure sit outside the scheme's typical scope and cost cap.
How It Fits a Bigger Electrification Plan
For a mixed site, employee car park charging plus depot fleet charging, the WCS typically covers only the car park portion, with the fleet-scale depot charging infrastructure funded and planned separately. Treating the two as one project with one funding source is a common early planning mistake.
Neutron's Role
Our Home Chargers and Commercial charging ranges cover the workplace and visitor charging use case the WCS is designed for, alongside our separate Fleet DC Charging range for the depot-scale side of a mixed site.
Who is eligible for the Workplace Charging Scheme?
UK businesses, charities, and public sector organisations with dedicated off-street parking are generally eligible, applying through OZEV. Eligibility and the exact grant amount depend on organisation size and current scheme rules, which are worth checking directly before budgeting a project around it.
Does the Workplace Charging Scheme cover fleet depot charging?
It can cover employee and fleet vehicle charging at a workplace site, but it's generally aimed at standard AC charging infrastructure rather than the high-power DC charging most large depot fleets need. Larger fleet electrification projects usually rely on a mix of schemes rather than the WCS alone.
Planning workplace or depot charging?
We cover both: standard workplace charging and high-power depot fleet infrastructure.
